SYLLOGISM

Syllogism is a series of images paired with a continuous ratio of words. The idea is to extract and weigh concepts that are in the form of words and juxtaposed in positions that are similar to mathematical ratios. The poem’s structure is an invitation to the reader to consider how the ideas relate to one another without forcing specific conclusions about those relationships. The conceptual ratios are layered with black and white images. The images selected are meant to provide the reader with a metaphorical place to consider the questions put forth by the words. The hope is to further develop the project into both a book and an installation.

A RADICAL TRANSLATION OF THE DAODEJING

I approach the Daodejing as both an amateur linguist and a seasoned artist. For me, the two are inseparable. My intention is to translate the work, sticking close to the original Chinese while focusing on the visual aspect of the Hanzi characters in the Chinese writing system. The difference is that the translation is coming from the perspective of a visual artist, therefore taking into consideration an aspect of the language that has perhaps not been previously incorporated. The insight provided by this perspective poses profound challenges to how we have come to interpret the work, yet is rooted in the original text itself. My goal is to satisfy an intellectual understanding of the work as well as enhance it. My hope is to provide a fresh translation to readers that remains academically rigorous.
